This design is based on the style of half-armor common in Europe in the late 16th and early 17th century. During this period, armor was beginning to be designed with reduced coverage (typically protecting only the essentials: the head, torso, shoulders, and legs from the hips to the knee) as military tactics shifted with the rising adoption of the gun. These armors were typically painted black to protect against corrosion with contrasting bright steel bands, which is how the style came to be known as "black and white."
